After a long train ride from Switzerland, we pulled in to Venice. Initially I didn't plan on hitting the city, but after talking with several folks along we way we made a snap decision to head that direction. Everyone raved about how unique and special it is, and how no trip would be complete without it. So we gave it a go.
In a nutshell, Venice is very much like what I expected. It can definately be romantic in that hanging out quietly together sort of way. The architecture style is very much weathered buildings exposing stucco through brick. The churches and palaces were nice, but not as impressive as some of the other cities we've been to.
But the thing that struck me most about Venice was not the canals. It was the maze-like structure of the city. While you may see a map of the city and the canals, don't even think about navigating the city by them. Expect to get lost often, expect to navigate narrow alleys, expect to coordinate your location by the three main bridges. It was a very interesting experience. And even though we only stayed two days, we were able to locate a couple of key places (gelato stand, guy selling trinkets, restaurant) even through the maze.
Another thing I noted was that the place was overrun with tourists. While many of the cities we've been to have loads of tourists, you can also spot the locals. Venice seemed to be all tourists on the street, though. It wasn't a huge problem, though, as most were interested in taking it all in as well. Oh - this is a ladies paradise for shopping. Imagine a twisting, winding maze of sidewalks bordered on either side by unique and different stores. Sure there were a lot of Murano glass and Burano lace stores, but there were also unique boutiques. Thankfully I don't have shopping impulse issues!
On the activity front, Brenton and I ate a lot of gelatto, pizza for lunch and dinner both days, constantly got lost, and took a tour of the large museum in St. Marks Square.
While Amsterdam still nudges out the top stop (barely) for Brenton, I think that this is my favorite. There isn't a ton to do like our other stops, but when I come back with Barb I know we are going to have a relaxing time.
