Today is our second full day here and Brenton and I are basically in business as far as jet lag is concerned. We slept from around 10PM to 9AM (Paris time) and are fully adjusted. I expected much worse, but we've had no problems.
We walked another 3 miles today to the Eiffel Tower and then up the first 42 flights of stairs to the big landing. We took quite a few pictures and then took an elevator up to the tippity top. The view up there was great, and we could just barely see the Sacre Coure which is a church near where we started. Brenton wasn't much for reading the history of the tower - he just wanted to get out of there and do something else.
I forced him to sit on the grass for about 5 minutes and try to plan out our next stop. He said 'let's do whatever' which would normally be fine. But in this case it was him getting a bit too big for his britches (tip of the hat to Mom for that one!). We decided to walk, and I told him to lead the way. In his impatience, he didn't want to look on the map for where the catacombs were, so we didn't go there. I decided to put him on a 20Euro/day budget for food and entertainment. That should keep him focused on enjoying his stay and pull him out of the ADD world that kids are accustomed to.
I think that is going to be one of my biggest challenges while I'm here - getting him to slow down and enjoy the world around him. He's adjusted to the language pretty well, saying hello, please, thank you, and pardon me in French. He's a C-level navigator of the streets via map, but the streets are very crazy here so I can't fault him there. He got us back to our hotel today via subway, which is saying a lot since everything is in French.
We plan on taking a night bike ride tonight and then eat dinner. He's on a budget now so we'll see where he picks.
Random notes:
- We met a nice couple of sisters from Korea. One is a teacher and I don't know what the other one did. But they gave us some good tips of things to do in the city.
- The Eiffel Tower is great in person and very impressive
- The street trash and dog poop is greater here than in NYC
- A lot more folks smoke too
- Bruno ads are EVERYWHERE. You'd think he was a French hero
- Picking our next stop is going to be hard. I was told a chunnel ticket to London from here is E150, which is more than I want to spend. I need to look and see if that's true, or if we need to held towards Holland/Belgium
- Brenton read the Diary of Anne Frank on the plane ride over, so he's ready to see her attic
I'll upload pix first to Flickr and then try to pull them across to the site. If it doesn't work, just check there.
Wish us luck and if anyone has any suggestions, send them over!
