BRENTONS ENTRY:
Brugge was sorta boring and boring some more but that was at first glance but taking a whirl around the city a tour. It kinda opened my mind. It was very unique and comfy I enjoyed the B&B alot. Brugge one of my recommendations!
JUSTIN'S ENTRY:
So the day started pretty normally. We got up, had a bite of breakfast, and walked to the train station. We didn't have any problems finding the train to Brugge, but we did have to pay a few euro since it was a high speed rail. It was "first class" so we got a little breakfast, even though the ride was only a bit over an hour.
After arriving, we waited in line for the city bus line and hopped a bus for the bed and breakfast. We were on it at least 15 or 20 minutes and apparently missed our stop... We looked outside the bus and noticed the B&B sign so we immediately pressed the stop button and hopped off. Woo hoo! The proprietor was nice enough and gave us one of those old skeleton keys for the room. We climbed four flights of creaky stairs to get to our room. It was a quaint house with a lot of character. The room was in the old attic and it was big enough for both of us.
The town is very small and is known for being a bit medieval. Well, we set out walking to the square and indeed the streets had that feel. Cobblestone streets and everything was one or two story. There were a lot of retail shops - it is a bit touristy, mind you - but it had a unique feel to it. Upon arriving at the square there were two amazing buildings that were enormous and amazing. We didn't get to tour inside them, but from the outside it was just really neat.
Brenton spied a segway tour company, so we decided to give that a go. We had a local guide that took us around the city for two hours giving us little tidbits of history and letting Brenton play on the segway. He was a nice guy and kept telling us both how rich and blessed we were. Brenton had a blast with the segway and got to be really good at navigating it around people and cars and such. I think that's a good way to see a new city and it fits the vacation criteria of doing things on vacation that you wouldn't normally do at home. I don't know that I'd do it again though, because all of the stares we got while on tour. Or maybe that's just because we are such beautiful people!
Charlie (our tour guide) recommended a great restaurant that was inexpensive and we took him up on the offer. Brenton got a GINORMOUS plate of spagetti for only E3, which would have been at least E12 at another restaurant. I got a ham and cheese omlette which hit the spot.
Afterwards we retired to the room in anticipation of going to Amsterdam. Who knows what adventures lie ahead for us there!
Random notes:
- We visited a nunnery where there are 20 active nuns. Charlie had only seen them 8 times since he had lived there, and we saw them on our tour. We chatted with her for a bit (sort of since she didn't speak English!) and off we went.
- We weren't able to try any of their local chocolate, but are saving up for the Swiss variety
- It's a fantastic town to visit for a day or two. It's especially great after the tourists leave and it dies down.
- Our camera battery died. I was wrong in thinking it would charge over the USB cable that I pull pix off with. Uh oh!
