Jus and Phil's Travels
Magnetic Island
1st - 6th August
Day 2 on the Oz Experience was much less eventful, due to the smaller crowd and less chatty driver. We got down to Townsville, where we caught the ferry across to Magnetic Island and had a go at sea kayaking before we left the Oz crew's hostel for our much nicer hostel (Maggies Beach House), located at the picturesque Horseshoe Bay. It turned out to be our favourite place in Oz so far, there was lots to do, met lots of nice people and the weather was stunning - How can they call this winter!?
We spent a day snorkelling at some secluded bays close to Horseshoe Bay, which had fringing coral reef and shoals of colourful tropical fish. However, it was a traumatic day! First Phil saw a jellyfish, which are supposed to be out of season... it made a funny sight as he splashed about trying to retreat whilst squarking out of his snorkel! Then later whilst trying to access one of the secluded bays, we were directed to take a path throught the bush, which suddenly became non-existent! With the potential of some deadly monster lurking close by and Jus now in the early stages of a breakdown, Phil bravely squashed a huge ant armed with a stick, and clambered us both over a boulder out of the wilderness!
The next day had a koala theme. We started off at the koala sanctuary where we saw some koalas... funily enough! But we also both got to hold a baby croc and a huge snake, under much less intimidating circumstances as the group was 90% female. Afterwards we went on an hour's guided jetski tour of the northern coast. It was great fun, we shared a jetski and the driving between us. Phil enjoyed the speed and got us drenched a few times as we ploughed through the waves! Later we went on the "Forts Walk", which meandered up to the top of the hill to a disused wartime lookout built into the cliffs, with an awesome 360 degree view of the island. On our way back down we saw 2 wild koalas up in the trees, soon ambushed by paparazi tourists!
