Weii, it was just ahop, skip and a jump to Tasmania from Melbourne! The flight was less than an hour and we arrived early. My uncle was there to meet us and he took us on a guided tour to Launceston and a quick look round the city which is very sleepy. Just on the outskirts of the city is a beautiful gorge through which the River Tamar flows. We walked along the path up the gorge for a fair way and saw the cable car that spans the gorge but didn't go up far enough to use it. The gorge was beautiful, with very steep sides and further upstream it got very rocky forming small rapids.
Most of the houses in Launceston are old, single storey and very different in style to other areas we have visited. The whole area has a much more old fashioned look about it and the scenery is rolling hills with mountains either side in the distance. They even have a ski resort in the winter!
The weather is still sunny but is just like a warm, English day rather than searingly hot.

Jenny and Kim The path along the Gorge looks fantastic. Very high but it appears quite safe??? Everything is on a lot grander scale than it's namesake in Cornwall. You seem to have met some very nice people.
