We picked the camper van up and set off about 11am after the video about what to do etc etc. then we drove to Uluru. 445km in total! It was such a long drive but luckily there were no traffic lights, very little traffic and straight roads. The scenery was very desolate with mainly red dust, some grassy tufts, some small trees and the occasional rock outcrop. We eventually arrived at 4:30 and was fully plugged in and operational by 5:00.
The heat is dry but searingly hot! There was no time for a shower only a quick change before meeting the bus for a Sounds of Silence dinner out in the bush. You are taken to a place not far from Uluru and The Olgas to watch the sunset with sparkly wine and canapés. We had a dance performance by some indigenous?? Young men. The Olgas or Kata Tjuta are rock formations and they look like Bart Simpson lying down on his back.
We then proceeded to a hollow where tables and chairs were set out for a dinner. We had a delicious three course meal with lots of wine including kangaroo, crocodile and barramundi a fish.
The Stars were brilliant and we had a talk about the stars we could see and then an opportunity to see Jupiter and its moons through a telescope. It was a good evening.
Once back we worked out how to have a shower in a camper van and then retired with the air con blasting out as it was still probably about 25C outside.

Jenny& Kim Your blog today really made us laugh. Knowing that you were a bit apprehensive about this leg of your tour June it all sounded very bleak at the beginning. However after seeing the young men dance (were they from Essex??????) your spirits were lifted and you enjoyed the important bits like the wine, dinner and the stars. How romantic!!!
Jenny Ps. Shame you are not still at school. You could have used the 'indigenous dance' in a production?????
Liz Loving your PS Jenny! Hope you're still enjoying the camper van trip, you never know you might get one when you're back in Blighty to go touring everywhere in!
Carol I can't see June in a camper van very often in UK it would be too cold even in the summer!
