Hi I have just got back from a 2 night self drive 4x4 adventure on Fraser Island. There were 11 of us, 4 of us girls who already knew each other, 2 Norweigen girls, 4 18 year old boys and a German guy. We all had such a laugh (well except for the spolit Norweigen girls who did nothing but moan the whole time and had faces like smacked arses!!), the 18 year old boys were so funny but all so young and we had to look after them the whole trip. I was nicknamed 'Mum' which I was not impressed with as I already felt old but the other girls were Granny and the crazy Aunties so I think I got off lightly. They actually asked one of my friends who is also 27 what she was doing travelling as why wasn't she married with kids by now!!!! The German guy who was only 21 was brilliant and did most of the driving and cooking.
Fraser Island is absolutely beautiful. It is the largest sand island in the world and the only rainforest grown out of sand - some interesting facts for you! The white beaches stretch on for miles and the rainforest is so pretty. On the first day we went to a lake where the water was the greenest I have ever seen and the sand dunes were pure white. We also saw a cool shipwreck and drove along the beach in the 4x4 which I was expecting to be filled with tourists and other vehicles but it was deserted. We couldn't swim in the sea as it was filled with man eating tiger sharks, box jellyfish, crocodiles and had strong currents - oh and even some snakes!! Needless to say we only paddled! Had drinks on the beach in the evening and watched the stars. The boys taught us some drinking games and we beat them every time resulting in them having to do a 'Goon Roll' - it looks as stupid as it sounds!
Yesterday we did some more exploring and saw some cool turtles at a pretty lake, several huge lizards and some dingos but no snakes despite searching everywhere. Apparently there is a snake that can kill an elephant with one bite! Went dolphin spotting off some cliffs and then had a swim in the champagne pools, which are pretty pools amongst the rocks. We also made a human pyramid on the beach which was a huge success!! We were all exhausted having got up at 6am (again!) and everyone was in bed by 9 including the 18 year olds - what losers!!
Today we went to some more lakes including the beautiful Lake Mackensie. It was great as we met up with a couple of people that we haven't seen since Magnetic Island and will now be seeing on Thursday night. I did all of the driving today and it was brilliant!!!!!! It was so bumpy but I didn't get stuck once (the German guy got stuck in the sand twice) and the Norweigen girl even said how safe she felt with my driving - hilarious! Got the ferry back this afternoon and we are now in Hervey Bay until Thursday. Not much to do here but I'm looking forward to sleeping later than 6am and just chilling out as the past 2 weeks have been non stop xxx
