After a somewhat lazy start and a brekkie cooked by Jules we set out to drive along the Western arm of Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy. The journey was made more interesting than it should be by the low level of petrol in the tank!
We were faced by a bank of cloud which occasionally split to reveal tempting glimpses of the rugged snow capped mountainous landscape that lay awaiting us in Mount Aspiring NP.
Glenorchy served well to refuel us with petrol, a flat white and a berry smoothy (from the Glenorchy Cafe or GYC, who interestingly used random items as table numbers, such as the head of a golf club!). We decided to use our new energy to take us to Paradise (at least that's what the sign said!)
I drove on the wrong side of a long stretch of gravelled road which was mostly impassable on the correct side as the gravel had been heaped up, strange! We came across a large colonial style property, quite literally in the middle of nowhere and well beyond paradise. The road began to deteriorate and I gave up on the wrong side of a piece of road that was full of running water and was obviously washed away on a regular basis. We took to foot and headed along the road towards the mountains. Having waded through a chilly river crossing and with unrelenting cloud no amount of mountain allure could keep us going. We headed back to the car and to Queenstown for our last night together on this trip. We were pleased that the gravel anomaly had been addressed by the time we reached it!
We dressed up (as much as you can when living out of holdalls!) and hit the town. Having had a drink at the Atlas bar on the waterfront we ended up in Kappas Japanese restaurant. We had the best prawn tempura ever. So good, we had a second serving of it, all washed down with some hot sake!
Sorry, no pics today, I left my phone recharging. You'll just have to believe me when I sat it Was very pretty scenery!
