Driving through NZ I have been surprised at how few sheep we've seen. For a land that is reknowned for having more sheep than members of the population and for someone who loves sheep, this has been somewhat disappointing!
Today we have been to Walter Peak Farm to feed my desire to see sheepies! Lucky Gaz!
We started our Sunday by visiting the world reknowned Ferg Burger establishment. Despite waiting 15mins for our food to be freshly cooked our timing was perfect and the food worth the wait. Gaz had a Big Stuff (eyes definitely bigger than belly moment) and I had a Morning Glory, which consisted of eggs, bacon, lettuce, red tomato and avo... Nice! We found a local loo to tidy ourselves up as we'd both managed to smear food all over our faces!
We boarded the TSS Earnslaw, a 1912 steam driven boat in the rain. A stroll into the engine room warmed us nicely. The boat took us across to Walter Peak Farm where we were greeted by Gordon who took us on a tour of the farm, in the rain! We fed red deer, merino sheep and highland cattle. Gary tried to tempt the alpacas but they looked just as grumpy as he does in the morning. He says they look 'aloof'!
We had high tea in the farmhouse and watched the header and hunter dogs work a small group of sheep. We also watched a merino sheep go from snuggly and warm to looking a bit sorry for its self in a shearing demo!
We chilled out in the arvo and prepared ourselves for our evening treat, courtesy of Jules. Around 8pm we went up a very large hill on the Skyline Gondola and had some amazing views out over Queenstown, the lake and the Remarkable mountain range. We were seated for supper and embarked upon 3 hours of good buffet food washed down with a bottle of Roaring Meg Sauv Blanc and finished with a glass of ruby port (drinks c/o Gary!).
Having stuffed ourselves pretty much to the brim we donned Canadian Goose Down Jackets, mine trimmed with mongoose fur (must get me one of these to keep me warm in the cottage!) and trotted up the hill to do a spot of star gazing. We learnt all about the Southern Hemisphere skies, saw the international space station whizz past, saw Jupiter and were wowed by the laser pointer which shone 7km of light saber stylee light into the skies! We looked at various things through the telescope. I was most impressed by seeing a black hole (it's not always about the sparkly things!) and Gary by the laser pointer or the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Cloud of Magellan galaxy (which contains some of the oldest stars), I'm not sure which one he liked the best! Anyhow, it was gone 1am by the time we got into bed and we'd had fun!
