Day 20 Saturday 31/08 Ypres Belgium 20 deg Cloudy/Sunny -
Enid here...Another day on the WW1 battlefields a round trip of 417km led us first north to Beaumont where the Canadian troops are remembered and the trenches are left as original and descriptions bring to life the area as it would have been. Then to Thiepval where the British-France memorial the largest in the world for all the unknown and missing soldiers over 72,000 names are displayed. The next two places Pozieres and Fromelles have very moving memorials to Australia's part in the battles and the history we have learnt is an amazing story of endurance and bravery and more. We crossed to Belgium and were able to experience the Last Post at the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) which has taken place every night at 8pm since 1928 another huge memorial and a silent crowd in remembrance was a fitting end of respect to an insight into this terrible war. Sampled a few cherry beers and another one recommended in a sunlit bar near the memorial, goodoh!
