We left the bush camp after breakfast and headed back to Musekese - the trip back was relatively uneventful - we looked for leopard but no luck although we thought we heard a baboon alarm call, we saw two lovely bushbuck and saw superb reflections of the trees in the water we passed. We stopped for coffee by a large granite kopie overlooking a drying flood plain while watching the birdlife feeding in the receding waters.
When we arrived back at Musekese we relaxed, had lunch, packed and of course watched the puku and other animals in front of the lodge - I got a great photo of a puku reflected in the water.
During our siesta we became aware of alarm calls around the lagoon, binoculars in hand we could see a lioness walking along the edge of the tall grass clearly worrying the puku - who were definitely unsettled by her!
Our afternoon drive was defined by the activity of the lions - one female was flat out under a bush while the one walking along the grass was soon reunited with her cubs- we decided to follow them as they headed further up the lagoon edge - worrying more puku.
Driving across the drying lagoon was a bumpy task but as the lioness had slumped again for another snooze this was necessary to get a better view of the cubs who were less intent on sleep and clearly wondering what the diesel grunting animal was about!
As the sunset we decided to go for a night drive as the lions were inactive - one of our early sightings was a first for us, a rare sighting, a very small antelope called a Sharps grysbok followed shortly after by a porcupine - we have seen their poo and tracks in the daytime so it was lovely to see them at night.
As we were heading back to camp we heard lions calling and in the spotlight saw one of males heading across to the mother and cubs - the cubs still have to be introduced to their adolescent siblings but are already mixing with the adult males and female....I am sure they will be a pride soon.
(Today's photo is of a hovering pied kingfisher we saw yesterday - because today's photos won't load!!)
