We opted to start the day with another walk so at 7am we set off in a different direction from camp - a circuitous route to the river lagoon confluence and back to camp.
We found leopard tracks - made in the early morning- along with civet tracks - - but no animals. We made our way to where the python had been killed by a leopard last week, parts of skeleton remained - in particular the head and jaw with its backward facing teeth and two sets in the upper jaw - you could see how once grabbed nothing was likely to get away! We saw puku waterbuck, a crested barbet and an olive woodpecker - which was pecking on a giant euphorbia - even though as we were looking for him Phil had said those immortal words ' he won't be on the euphorbia'! Godfrey then spotted a male roan - who walked past us, allowing me a photograph ( today's photo) - then he smelt us and ran off causing the oxpeckers on his body to scatter!
Coffee was at the confluence - looking back down the lagoon you could see hundreds of grazing puku - alongside a fish eagle, 4 crowned crane, grey heron, egrets including a black egret and Egyptian geese - a lovely sight.
Just as we were leaving Godfrey noticed Grants zebras coming to the water - pure black and white no shadow stripe. New birds included - green pigeon, greater blue eared starling and a pale billed hornbill.
When we returned we showered and packed for our 3 days at fly camp with German/ Chinese couple -Herman & Fang - perhaps not our ideal travel companions. We left at 3pm and did the first 20 minutes by boat, picked up a jeep on the opposite bank and transited to the camp - the worst bit was the tetse flies - the best bits were the numerous bush buck and the changing landscape - riverine.
We arrived at camp at just before 7pm and settled in to our tent before dinner.
After dinner as we sitting chatting a hyena walked through camp, after visiting the kitchens. I then heard my first leopard - a female 'coughed' the first two times she did it she was close but the third time she was sadly further away so we never got to see her - early to bed tonight as it's an early start tomorrow as we head for a day on Busanga plains.
