It dawned another beautiful day - the tide was at its lowest and Kukak bay outside our room looked as if the plug had well and truly been pulled.
This meant a longer hike to the boats which were in another bay and just floating.
The bay was flat calm as we set off and remained the same all trip - the first day it was t-shirt weather for almost all the trip.
That said the bears were nowhere to be seen - we eventually found one young bear walking along the beach eating berries - he then went up the hillside - munching as he went - we could see the bushes shaking!
Then we watched the otters, the eagles and any other passing birds while we searched for more bears.
Finally we went to the outer edges of the bay towards and passed a cove with a waterfall, I had not seen it before - gallons of melt water were gushing down making a spectacular sight.
Perry had mentioned that he sometimes sees a bear in fishing near the waterfall and thought the bear might be fishing for flounder but had never seen it catch anything.
While I was looking at the waterfall John and Perry spotted a bear lying on the bank right by the water - it took me ages to see him as he was in the shade and not obvious - the cove was quite shaded and dark with sunlight only breaking through in some spots.
We then watched as the bear got into the river - and 'snorkelled' - he had his head under and seemed to be looking for fish.... then he appeared triumphant with a very white flat fish in his mouth - he had a flounder. ( today's photo)
Needless to say this was a first for Perry and in his excitement to take photos the boat glided into a rock and nestled by the bank - a great place to watch the bear eat the fish and fish again - this time catching something and eating it behind a rock - out of our sight. He then continued up the river to the side of the falls and then returned to stand close to the falls before moving back into the river but higher up. Sadly it was time for lunch so we had to leave and make our way back to the lodge but what a fabulous finale!
At the lodge we all ate our last lunch together before the float planes arrived with new guests and to take us back to Kodiak.
The second plane arrived after ours but as the luggage was mixed between the two we had to wait for it in Kodiak. They were even later because they had a legendary pilot - Willie, complete with droopy moustache, on board - and he took the young couple on assignment visiting all the US National Parks for National Geographic on the scenic route back!
Back at the Kodiak Inn - it was mundane stuff - John did a load of washing and drying with a spot of ironing to keep his hand in, while I sorted photos and went to the gym.
The evening finished with a fish supper at Henry's - a good old Alaskan restaurant.
