It dawned bright and sunny - hurrah - there was still a chill in the air but hot enough to have lunch on the deck!
The day started slowly one young skittish bear who came to the shore saw us then ran off after thinking about it for a while. We later saw a more confiding teenager who walked along the shore and only moved away when the boat scrapped the bottom - but he was good looking and fresh faced - no scars like the big bears. I focused on the bald eagles to see if we could get a good flying shot as they took off....not too bad ( today's photo) but I failed with the pigeon gullimots and the double breasted cormorants although I captured some northern pintail females who were swimming in a group which meant we could identify them.
Then as luck would have it just as we were were leaving we saw uno and her cubs in a cove and the real reason our attention was caught - was a young teenager on the other side of the cove swinging around and playing with a piece of old carpet! From my photos he looked like one of the two we saw play fighting yesterday.
We had to head back for lunch at 12 ish so the boats could fuel up - something they can only do at high tide as they have to get to the fuel shed at the front of the lodge.
After lunch we headed back to see if the bears were still around - but our immediate attention was caught by a humpback whale circling the bay - due to the milky glacial waters it was difficult to spot where it was - I only captured a distant out of focus fluke!
We motored up to the marshy area and as there was a bear at the end we could anchor we went ashore and walked into the marsh and just observed a big old male as he slept, then got up - drooling like old people do - and then grazing before crossing the stream and continuing to graze across the marsh.
Back in the boat we continued along by the marsh and watched a bear splashing around in the river mouth trying to fish - looks like the salmon may be beginning to run.
