After waking up with an outside shower - we had breakfast outside watching the warthogs. It was definitely windier today. We left at 10 for the 45 minute trip to the more rustic Africa on Foot in the Klasserie Reserve. As we approached we passed a large herd of elephant and saw a white headed shrike.
We had to wait a short while for our rooms but were soon able to settle in to our brick built chalets - ours was round with an outside shower. Ionna was happy as they had good wifi so she could catch up with her friends and news on One Direction - who by fluke were touring South Africa during our visit!
It was too cool to sit by the pool so we relaxed until lunch and likewise until we met again at 4.00pm for tea and our game drive. Our guide was Enoch - who is usually the tracker but as the camp was full he was guiding - needless to say his animal tracking skills were superb.
First stop was to watch a big and rather grumpy old hippo with bad teeth - observed when he opened his mouth! (today's photo) Next we sat in a herd of elephant watching a young baby trying to control his trunk - the best entertainment is watching young animals learning how the world and their bodies work in harmony!
A leopard had made a kill, a kudu, earlier in the day and she was now back on it so we made our way with other vehicles to see if we could see her - only one/two vehicles are allowed at once which is positive so we waited our turn. The journey in was interesting as we had to push through bush negotiate deep gullies and steep climbs to get to the mound where she was. She had had her fill and was lying behind a log when we arrived while a hyena was sitting around the carcass seemingly also having fed well as it was snoozing. It's unusual to see both sitting together but one hyena alone is not as much of a threat as a clan.
As we negotiated our way around the tree the leopard got up and walked around to were we were positioning - so we got a brilliant full head on view.
After all the excitement we were last to leave and were late back to dinner arriving at 8.15pm - nobody minds as the wildlife always comes first.
