We had another early 5.30 am breakfast as today we headed for the excellent canopy walkway at Kakum National Park, a 15 minute drive from our hotel. The 360 km² Kakum National Park protects secondary upper guinea tropical rainforest and our aim was to get there for first light enabling us to spend the most active bird viewing hours 40 meters above the forest floor on the canopy walkway, on one or more of the seven platforms which are joined by walkways and circle part of the forest. As we are birders, and pay more, we are allowed the key to access the canopy at first light.
Our first surprise however was as we got onto the path to walk to the canopy William made us move to the right quite quickly - it was then we noticed a large puff adder by the side of the path getting ready to warm up - I am not sure it would have done anything as it was very cold and not moving anywhere - that is of course unless we trod on him!
After a mornings watching ( highlights below) we left and walked back to the minibus returning to the hotel for lunch, another swim and a relax before venturing out again at 4pm to catch the evening hours on the platforms and finally departing at dusk but it was dark by the time we reached the car.
Dinner tonight we did get to try the fried ice-cream with some fruit salad - it was very good - it was encased in a thick pastry/ batter and did not turn to liquid as you might think - we thought it was a Ghanian speciality but William assured us it was the first time he had seen it.
After dinner we reflected on what we had seen and checked our check lists -
the species included :- sabines puffback, preuss's golden-backed weaver, red headed
malimbes, tiny and little green sunbirds, yellowbill ( today's photo), white breasted negrofinch, rufous crowned eremomela, naked faced and yellow spotted barbets, red fronted and African grey parrots, velvet mantled drongos and the congo serpent eagle, cassins hawk-eagle,
the upper guinea endemic brown cheeked hornbill and black and yellow casqued hornbills.
