The weather brightened and the sea and wind conditions were such that we could finally go to Steep Creek (where the other group had gone on day 1) to see if we could find the young spirit bear seen on the camera trap there.
It was a lovely day and the trip there enjoying the scenery, watching cruising humpbacks and scoter ducks raised the spirits and we were all hopeful. However when in situ - in a slightly precarious spot on top of little more than a muddy ledge - we could see no signs of bears eg no half eaten fish so after an hour or so we packed up. I did see a harbour seal while taking a loo break but that was the only wildlife. We then went for a cruise around the coast before going to our next stop -Tajui bay. We waited for a falling tide then sat and watched both on our zodiac and on the bank as the tide fell revealing a very different landscape. It was really interesting watching it change, the fish became visible and yet again we were hopeful of a bear as we had also seen a half eaten salmon on the bank. The light was so good we got great reflections in the water -(see today's photo of a barnacle encrusted rock.)
As the weather was lovely and the bear activity non existent there was more snoring on the river bank - led by John!
I watched the glaucous gulls, bald eagles, golden eagles and ravens. Before we left we walked along the river bed as it was really shallow - and I could see jelly fish on the bottom. Adam, one of the guys, decided he was going to catch a salmon and albeit they were on their last legs it was easier said than done - he did however catch one and in so doing threw it onto the bank - I have never seen a salmon fly so high- he then picked it up triumphant and was photographed with his trophy before putting it back to finish its journey. The salmon was a pink humpy.....so named as in the migration up stream the lovely pink salmon grows a noticeable hump!
After our escapades in the river we collected our stuff and headed back to the boat - John slipped on the wet bank and fell back onto his rucksack - nothing hurt but he broke his mug and we had to ask for another! ( they gave us a nice thermo plastic mug for our much needed hot drinks.)
