Fully breakfasted we had left the hotel by 7am along with some fellow travellers headed to the city airport to join the remaining passengers our Silverseas charter flight to Ushuaia. The flight took almost 4 hours - as long as a trip to Tenerife!
When we arrived we saw traveller's who had clearly just got off the incoming Siverseas trip as they were donning their distinctive red parkas. We eventually got our luggage and passed it to the ships baggage handlers who would ensure the next time we saw it it would be in our cabin. We however got on a coach and were taken for lunch - everybody else had traditional barbecued lamb and other meats I,the rare vegetarian, had a nice vegetable bake. We sat with a family from Mexico now living in Chicago and another couple from the USA.
Our fellow travellers were actually a broad cosmopolitan mix of English, American, Australian, New Zealanders, Canadians, Swedish , Chinese and German. After lunch we headed to the ship and were on board by 1530.
We unpacked everything as we are in one place, cabin 406, for almost 3 weeks - it saves digging around in the bottom of bags and means we can put the bags away and ensure our small space is comfortable!
Before we set sail we all had to assemble for the mandatory life boat and emergency drill on the chilly windy decks.
The wind was so strong and pushing us into the dock that it delayed our departure until 6pm when they had lightened a tad.
We had our introductions to key staff and then had dinner while heading up the Beagle Channel.......we had had some motion sickness pills prior to boarding so everything was a breeze!
We later heard from the captain that he had to say he was leaving for Puerto Argentinas de Malvinas - otherwise they would have caused problems if he had insisted that we were leaving for the Falkland Islands - just proving that the the events of 1982 rumbled on....and on.
( Today's photo is from the dock at Ushuaia looking up the Beagle channel.)
