As I woke early and no one else was about I had a quick shower before breakfast.
With everyone ready we left at 8 ish and headed back to Tzaneen for another snack buying opportunity and for the coffee addicts, a latte at the coffee shop - we clearly made an impact as the waitress remembered us!
A short while later we were at Karongwe - we had a welcome drink, paid for our optional game drives - which everyone was doing - and had a quick orientation of the main complex. After which, and because it was our hottest day yet, at 32 degrees, I decided to go for a swim in a very cold, typical African, swimming pool - it was however a good size and I did 50 lengths. While doing this our guides and a couple from the lodge were putting up our tents and making lunch.
At 3.30pm Gus, the lodge ranger who was staying with us and the head ranger came to take us on a game drive.
Every game drive is different and I got good pictures of male nyala, a male lion - comatose in a ravine after a good meal of zebra, a go away bird sitting at the top of a tree on good light and a fiery necked nightjar absorbing the warmth from the road. The last sighting was of three porcupine - including a small one - scurrying through the grass - a rare sight and just a blur on the photograph.
Back in camp there was an enormous camp fire around which a traditional South African meal was being created in a big iron pot (poijke). After supper we sat gazing into the fire drinking mugs of hot chocolate........sleep came easily.
