Dry but overcast - today we walked the path out of Wanaka towards Albert Town; it went along the edge of the lake and then along the bank of the Clutha river. We decided to walk for two hours, have our sandwiches, and then return thus making it a good 4 hour walk. The cloud made it very atmospheric as it changed shape but shrouded the mountain tops and kept them hidden from view. Our two hours were up approximately 1km from Albert Town so we had made good progress. Lots of mountain bikers were out and about particularly on the return leg but importantly the signs made it clear that they must give priority to walkers.....that said they could still be annoying as they sneaked up behind you. Just as we got back into Wanaka we saw lots of ducks by the edge of the lake - including a large group of scaup (today's picture is a male - he has golden eyes while the female has black.)
We had a quick wander around the shops - a few sales - but the only thing we wanted was a pair of mittens for me as I can't get gloves on over my strapped fingers, and Stewart island might be cool - it hopefully won't be now as we found a pair of merino ones! Finally before returning to our apartment and packing we went to Patagonia for our last coffee, churros and caramel dip - yum and much deserved after our walk.
