I was up early and went for a run in cool autumnal drizzle - it was refreshing running along the bike/pedestrian track smelling the pine trees and taking in the clean fresh air. Back at the apartment we had a lovely light breakfast of fruit and yogurt before heading back to Remote Passages for our whale watching trip. As we were early we found a coffee shop, had a coffee and bought a couple of freshly baked cakes for later; as we spotted the post office I also bought stamps for our postcards before we headed back to Remote passages for our trip briefing. We put on the warm red flotation suits again and watched a video on the whales of this area before getting back onto the zodiacs to head off in a seaward direction. We hoped to see the migrating grey whales which we should catch up with again in Mexico in February when they are giving birth. The weather on the edge of the pacific was a little lumpy making for an exciting trip back to port but it was all worth it as we got to spend time with a couple of grey whales. (Today's picture is a grey whale fin!) We also saw lots of hauled out sea lions and around the light house a group of harbour seals. On the way back to port we stopped to look at the first nations settlement opposite Tofino - you could clearly see the totem poles telling their history. Most work in Tofino and their mode of transport is,not unsurprisingly, boat.
We returned to the town and decided on a fish and chip lunch - which we bought from 'Big Daddy's' - it was freshly cooked and delicious - even better as we sat outside, on one of their tables, in lovely warm sunshine.
We walked back to the apartment, wrote our cards and as it was bright and sunny returned to walk around Tofino's eclectic craft and local shops. My one purchase was a soft First Nations designed belt.
We spent the evening relaxing and enjoying the views from the apartment.
