Our last full day of holiday - started as usual with tea and flapjack to our tent. After breakfast we jumped in the jeep to see if we could find the roan which the riders had seen -as we passed the end of the runway we saw two sand grouse taking in the sun. After a further 40 minutes or so - success- we found one lone roan with beautiful facial markings, it allowed us a perfect sighting through binoculars but then headed into the bushes - so no photograph - we continued around the waters edge to see a magnificent herd of about 12 running through the spillway and onto the land ( today's photo). They ran off quickly into the safety of the thickets - we followed - and parked up to see if we could find them on foot with limited success - we had a couple of glimpses of an animal moving through the bushes, could hear hooves, saw footprints and droppings but had no further good sightings of the very shy herd. Buoyed by our success we headed off for a game drive around the edge of the spillway and back to camp - we saw a slaty egret dispatching a frog and a striped kingfisher - both new birds - so arrived back at camp very happy.
As new guests were arriving brunch was at noon - this allowed me to have a swim - but as the tent lady had taken my drying bikini with the laundry I had to improvise with bra and pants!
Refreshed we had brunch and siesta followed by a walk with Dave an older and very knowledgeable South African guide. Our first problem however was getting stuck in the water enroute to our start point! Luckily we were able to jump to dry land and walk while a tractor came to pull the jeep out making it ready for our return to camp! We were joined on the tail of our walk by a young Botswanan called System - who Dave included in all the conversations about local uses for the plants which was excellent.
After dinner we finished as much packing as we could, as all our clean and laundered clothes were back, but will have one more walk tomorrow so a whole heap of dusty dirty stuff will still have to be added - in bags.
Our plane time is through - and it's a 1045 departure.
