A nice tray of tea, with mugs, and flapjack arrived at 0600 to wake us up. We then headed to mess for a light breakfast before going on a walk, with James and Paul, at 7.00am. To get to the start point we got in the jeep and passed the carcass enroute; this time we saw a hyena feeding while actually standing inside the massive head and neck cavity and one was lolloping off - no doubt full.
The riders left for fly camp where we were all going to spend the night we joined them later after our walk and a shower, making our way by boat. The boat journey through the Selinda spillway was lovely - with fish eagles, jacana, cormorants and saddle billed storks walking in the reeds, flying along side and around us or perched in adjacent trees as we cruised through. In some places the water was very shallow which required slow careful navigation by James to ensure we didn't grind to a shuddering halt. We were greeted with a glass of champagne and the galling fact that the riders had sen a small herd of roan antelope - the one large antelope I have never seen but aspire to! Hopefully we will be lucky. After settling into our tents we had lunch which finished with chocolate eggs - which had been adorning the table in nests the waiters had made out of reeds - a memorable way to spend Easter Sunday.
As with all fly camps we had camp beds, long drop toilets and bucket showers which we enjoyed when we returned from our afternoon walk.
Dinner was by the camp fire- what more could you ask for, good company, good food and a clear star filled sky - it's great to be away for all the light pollution of the northern hemisphere.
