We got on yet another bus heading for Beunos Aires, 20hours away. We arrived at our hostel in BA and went for a walk around the area San Telmo. The vibe of the area was friendly, with lots of different restaurants and small bars. We sat outside one restaurant and had steak sandwiches, chips and beers, all for £8! It was so tasty! We then walked around the centre of BA, visiting some landmarks and found our way back to the hostel. At the hostel we planned our route through Argentina and played Yanif until the early evening. We decided to go out for dinner and test the famous Argentinian steak. A restaurant called La Rosalia was recommended to us. J ordered just under half a kilo of steak, double the size of Rachel's. In the restaurant J spoke in Spanish, and a lot of what he learnt on his last trip was coming back to him, which is handy! It was a lovely, delicious meal but both struggled to finish. Neither of us can believe how cheap food is here, the whole meal came to £20, a lot cheaper than Brazil! We are looking forward to treating ourselves to this more often.
On Saturday we arranged a tour of the city on an open top bus for Monday. It was a really sunny day so we decided to walk around the city. We came across a carnival celebrating integration of Latin America cultures. Thousands of people paraded one of the main streets in BA dressed in traditional Bolivian clothes, dancing and playing traditional music. We watched for a while and then looked at the stools selling souvenirs.
In the evening we went and met Ronan and Gail our friends who we had met in Brazil and had dinner and drinks with them in the area of Palermo, this place had a great atmosphere with the main square being packed with bars and restaurants. We started with a small wine bar just outside the main square with a bottle of wine, then took a walk into the busy party area and had another 2 bottles of red wine! All of us were getting rather hungry and needed something to soak the red wine up. A restaurant caught our eye and we took a table outside and enjoyed beers, wine and some great tasty tapas! Ronan and Gail left after the meal as they were tired from the journey and all the wine was probably not helping, so us two decided to go for a couple more beers in the square and agreed to get a taxi back.
The Sunday we were recommended to go to a famous market held every Sunday in San Telmo. This market was packed full of stools with various crafts that people have made. We spent a few hours walking around and saw some fantastic works of arts and crafts and we even managed to catch our first tango dance! For lunch we walked around the food area of the market and ordered hotdogs and freshly squeezed orange juice from one of the stools.
For Monday we had booked the city tour through our hostel. The tour picked us up in the afternoon so we waited at the hostel in the morning. The tour was ok, but nothing compared to our one in Rio. We managed to see some parts of the city that we had not seen before such as the Boca Juniors Stadium; La Bombonera (the chocolate box) and Caminito Street with brightly coloured houses. We also drove through the Recoleta area, which we have decided we will visit when we return from Uruguay. The tour was also a good opportunity to find out some of the history of the city and what the buildings were in Plaza de Mayo, which we had relaxed in on one of our previous wonders of the city. In the evening we went for a cheap meal at the restaurant next to our hostel, we ordered pizzas but they weren't that good. The cheese was piled on in huge slices, creating a thick layer, it was too much. Even for Rachel!(the number 1 pizza lover)
