So we went back to Buenos Aires but stayed in an area called Palermo this time, just for 2 nights. The reason for staying in this area was because it was walking distance to the Recoleta area where the famous cemetery is located. The grave of Eva Peron (Evita) is here and is the most popular grave visited. After, we walked round the market outside, situated in the pretty park where people were selling homemade crafts and food. We bought some hot bread stuffed with ham, cheese and onion, tasty! Heading back to the hostel we had one last place we wanted to visit; the Japanese Gardens. This was a stunning garden with a few trickling waterfalls, and in particular a wooden red painted bridge which seemed to be everybody's choice to having a photo taken. We spent about an hour here walking round, it was very relaxing, well worth a visit. That night we did little as we had once again another 20hour bus ride to look forward to!
The 20hour bus ride was worth it. Arriving in Puerto Madryn we checked in at a hostel called La Tosca. A great place with friendly staff and honest advice about tours. This makes a change to the hostels where staff try to sell you something to make a profit! So the next day we booked on a tour of Peninsula Valdes where we would hopefully see southern right whales, penguins, elephant seals and a few other animals. We had an hour and a half on the boat seeing the whales, it was soooo amazing to see these huge animals in their natural habitat. We saw about 4 different pairs of mothers with their baby. The babies would be left at the surface while the mother went down to the ocean floor to get food. The babies would then splash around on the surface to let their mother know where they were. We couldn't believe their size, some were even bigger than the boat we were on! At one stage the baby whale swam right up to the side of the boat we were on. The time on the boat went so quickly, we could have spent all day watching them; they were so peaceful. Everybody on the tour was so excited and couldn't stop talking about what we had seen, but the tour continued and soon we would be visiting the elephant seal colony.
After a fairly long drive we arrived at the beach where the elephant seals were. The beach was not your conventional white sand beach, but the landscape was magnificent. The elephant seals were lazing around on the sand, trying to cool down by flicking sand over themselves. The next stop on the tour was to see the penguins. They were on another beach on the peninsula, we took some photos and walked along the pathway to another viewing point, we were told to keep a careful eye out for snakes and spiders. Probably not the most comfortable 200m walk we have had. Seeing both the elephant seals and penguins was a good site, but nothing in the day compared to seeing the whales!
