Summary
Well that's it for Central America. Three months, six countries. Countless beautiful sunsets plus one or two beautiful sunrises. Amazing beaches and views. Whale sharks, turtles, rays and dozens of murdered Lion Fish. Mayan temples, zip lines, Tarzan swings, river tubing, tree climbing and Volcano boarding. Not to mention lots of amazing people and new friends! I'm already quarter of the way through my adventure but with a lifetime of memories.
Each country held something special that separated it from the rest. From the crystal clear Cenotes of Mexico to the Cloud Forests of Costa Rica. Nicaragrua was cheap, fun and exciting. It was an adventure to travel around but we always go to where we needed. We only touched on Honduras but the diving Mecca of Utila was quite an experience. Costa Rica was expensive but the lush green beauty of the cloud forests and the huge sandy beaches made it a fantastic end to our trip and quite the adrenaline rush. But there is still something about Belize that stands out for me. I loved the fact that there were no Pizza Huts, Burger Kings or McDonalds in fact there were no chains at all. It was a refreshing change. It is still in its infancy as far as backpacking is concerned, and there is so much to do without having to go on an organised (expensive) tour.
Given another month or so I would definitely head to Guatemala and finish what I started there. So many people have told me how amazing it is there. Maybe in a few years I'll head back there for some Spanish lessons!
As I write this I'm sitting in the VIP lounge in Costa Rica's airport. You see we had to book a flight from Costa Rica to Guatemala City to catch our next flight (a better option than a three day bus journey). What we hadn't realised is that we have booked Business class tickets so for now we have all the free snacks and drinks that we can handle before jumping on our flight to do more of the same. Everyone else is in business attire and Liann and I are sat here looking like travellers, me with shorts, a slightly stained shirt and walking boots. Love it! It's not all luxury sadly, we have an 8 hour wait in Guatemala City before our cattle class flight to Chicago!
So as we say goodbye to Central America we can look ahead to the next 9 months! Next up the USA, it's going to be quite a culture shock but I'm excited to see family, visit new places, see the big apple and meet up with old friends from back home and new friends in California!
Adios Central America. Hey Y'all America!
