Panda's, nog een grote stad, en plannen wijzigen

In Xi'an hebben we afscheid genomen van Farron en Aaron. Zij gaan min of meer rechtstreeks naar Shangri-la en ons plan is om de langzame weg te nemen: vanaf Chengdu, met de bus naar het westen, paar dagen in Litang verblijven, en dan naar het zuiden, naar Shangri-la in de provincie Yunnan. De trein naar Chengdu is vol, en onze bedden zijn niet naast elkaar. Gelukkig zit ik tussen de vrouwen en Jos tussen de mannen. In beide groepjes zit wel iemand die wat engels praat, ze vragen waar we vandaan komen en andere kleine dingen. De reis verloopt goed en voor we het weten zijn we in Chengdu. Op het station staat onze gids van het hostel al te wachten. Dit keer dus geen grappige verhalen over onze aankomst ;)

Het Sim's cozy garden guesthouse bevindt zich buiten het centrum. De winkels zijn dus ook niet op toeristen gericht (en de verkopers ook niet, dat is best fijn). Een van de dingen die hier verkocht wordt zijn gasfornuizen. Twee-pits wel te verstaan! Maar dan wel 2 serieuze pitten. Helaas hebben we geen foto's.

Onze slaapkamer heeft een dvd-speler en je kunt gratis dvd's huren. De laatste keer dat we een film zagen was in het vliegtuig naar Hong Kong, we hebben dus wat in te halen ;). Om onze kennis van China een beetje aan te vullen, huren we het derde deel van de mummy, kungfu panda en the forbidden kingdom. Ja, echt handige info, haha.

Donderdag 16 april, met de bus naar het Giant Panda Research center. Daarvoor zijn we tenslotte naar Chengdu gekomen: om de wereldberoemde panda's te bekijken! We gaan met het openbaar vervoer, en niet met een toer. Dat scheelt geld en blijkt eenvoudiger te zijn als de beschreven in de lonely planet. Bus 1 naar het busstation, bus 502 naar de panda's. Kosten: 3 yuan pp enkele reis. Dankzij het briefje van het hostel, laat de buschauffeur ons op tijd weten dat we eruit moeten. Het park is mooi opgezet. Veel bamboe, een klein museum met veel informatie en veel panda's. Het was voedertijd dus de meeste panda's waren vrij actief, erg leuk om een paar uur naar te kijken. In de middag blijft Jos in het hostel films kijken en ga ik op zoek naar People's Park en het kunst museum. De eerste is makkelijk gevonden en erg leuk om doorheen te lopen. Verwacht alleen niet de rust die in Sonsbeek park heerst! In dit park wordt oa muziek gemaakt, gedanst, en chinees schaak gespeeld. Overal zijn mensen. Het enige nadeel is dat de muziek overal vrij hard staat. Geen rustig parkhangen, maar wel erg leuk! Het kunst museum is ook eenvoudig gevonden, maar het lijkt erop dat de tentoonstellingsruimte niet open is. Het zal wel, ik loop verder en ga wat winkelen.

De volgende dag willen we onze reis regelen. We hebben al verhalen gehoord dat het westen van de provincie in maart afgesloten was, maar als we horen dat het nog steeds niet mogelijk is om naar het westen te reizen zijn we erg teleurgesteld. Het komt erop neer dat buitenlanders niet naar west Sichuan mogen reizen. Deze regio mag dan in de provincie Sichuan liggen, maar de bevolking is Tibetaans. We hadden ons verheugd op een reis door een stukje Tibet, bergen, hooggelegen graslanden en kleine dorpen.

Nadat we de opties hebben bekeken, besluiten we een vlucht te boeken van Chengdu naar Lijiang. Minder spectaculiair, maar wel snel. De vlucht is pas over een paar dagen, we hebben nog wat tijd over. Helaas is de noord west hoek van Sichuan ook afgesloten, de Boeddha in Leshan lijkt het geld en 2 uur reizen niet waard, en dus we blijven in Chengdu. We bezoeken computer city, de outdoorzaken, de Tibetaanse wijk, de toeristische Jin Li straat, en de Wenshu temple. Over de eerste moet ik even iets kwijt: we zijn al in een paar van deze "computercity"s geweest, en het concept is werkelijk fantastisch: verdiepingen met kleine winkeltjes, meer een markt als een winkelcentrum. Je kunt er vanalles kopen: van losse onderdelen tot laptops en spelcomputers, van boeken tot de meest geweldige gadgets. En tussendoor ook nog camera's en mobiele telefoons. Waarom hebben we zoiets niet in Nederland! Als je niet van computers houdt, maar meer van culture dingen, dan is de Wenshu temple een echte aanrader. Slechts 5 yuan pp, en je kunt je kaartje inleveren voor wierook. Een mooie tempel, rustig en vriendelijke mensen. Het leuke van de wierook is dat je een klein beetje mee doet. De monnik geeft een korte uitleg, en dan kijk je naar de locals en volgt het voorbeeld (min of meer).

Panda's, another big city, and changing plans

We said goodbye to Farron and Aaron in Xi'an. They will, more or less, go directly to Shangri-la, our plan is to take the long way: from Chengdu, take the bus west, stay for a day orso in Litang and then south to Shangri-la in Yunnan province. The train to Chengdu is pretty full, and we do not have beds next to each other. Luckely, I am surrounded by mostly women and Jos by mostly men. The people are friendly and some speak a little english. We when arrive in Chengdu, our guide is waiting for us. Sorry, no funny stories this time, everything went very smooth. ;)
Our guesthouse, Sim's cozy garden, is located in non-tourist area. And that means: no souvenirshops, and no pushy souvenir-sellers! Instead: we see the things the locals buy, like gascooking stoves. Only 2 burners, but probably more power then my 6 burners! I should have taken a picture!

Our private room has a dvd player, and you can borrow dvd's for free. Last time we saw a movie was on the plane to Hong Kong, so we feel we have some catching up to do. We also watch movies about China: Mummy 3, Kung Fu panda and The forbidden kingdom. Yep, really usefull if you travel in China, haha.

On Thursday April 16, we take the bus to the Giant Panda Research center. Because that is why we stopped in Chengdu: to see the panda's. We take the bus, we like being independent. It is actually very simple: bus# 1 to the busstation, then bus# 502 to the panda's. We have a note that says were we want to get off, and the busdriver drops us off at the right stop. The most difficult part was finding the #502 busstop. And cheap: 3 yuan each, 1-way. The park is really nice, lot's of bamboe, a small & interesting museum and many panda's. The panda's are fed in the morning, so they were pretty active. Fun to look at for a couple of hours. Around 11AM we go back to the hostel. Jos decides to watch some movies in the afternoon, and I will go to the Peoples park and the art museum. The Peoples park is fun, but not as quiet as you might think: there is music everywhere! People make music, dance, and play chinese chess. The music is pretty loud, but it ok. I really liked visiting this park, just walking around, looking at the people. When I arrive at the art museum it seems that the exhition gallery is closed, or perhaps I missed it. Anyway, I walk towards the center and go shopping.

The next day we want to make arrangements for our trip to Shangri-la. We have heard the story that west Sichuan was closed in March, but when we hear it is still closed, we are very disappointed. It basically comes down to the fact that no foreigners are allowed into west Sichuan. The reason is probably that, allthough it is Sichuan, the people are Tibetan. We really looked forward to seeing a little bit of Tibet, mountains, rural areas, and small villages.

After going through the options, we decide to book a flight from Chengdu to Lijiang. Less spectacular, but a quick way to get there. The flight leaves in a couple of days, so we have some time for sightseeing. Unfortunately, the north west corner of Sichuan is closed for simular reasons, the big Buddha in Leshan does not seem to be worth the money and 2 hours travel, so we stay in Chengdu: computer city, outdoor shops, the Tibetan area, touristy Jin Li street and the Wenshu temple. The chinese "computer city"s are a wonderfull place to go shopping: it is really a market in a building. Several floors with little shops (more desks then real shops), selling everything from loose parts to gadgets. They also have camera's and cellphones. Anyway, if you are not into computers, but more into cultural things: the Wenshu temple is worth the visit. It's only 5 yuan, and you get free insense. It is a nice temple, quiet enough to walk around and friendly people. The nice thing about the incense is that it makes you part of the experience. The monk gives a brief explainantion, and then you just look at the locals and follow, more of less, their example.
