Jono's Travels
First up after breakfast it was a quick stop at Pont du Gard, a 2000 year old Roman engineered aqueduct crossing the Gardon River, built 50km in length and was built to carry water from a spring at Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). While what we saw as only about 360 meters of that 50km, this was mainly because of the uneven terrain between the spring at Uzès to Nîmes, the aqueduct was mostly an underground aqueduct, that followed a long and wind route over the entire distance, however the 360 meter aqueduct bridge need to be created to complete the link to the other side. Standing 49 meters heigh each brick was pre constructed and numbered before it reached the site and put in place, and was created in the mere 5 years. Over the total 50km distance of the overall aqueduct the total height only changes by 17meters from point a to point b, with the bridge only dropping its height by about 2.5cm. This is no longer used these days as an aqueduct, due to the lack of maintenance over the 4th century it became increasingly clogged by minerals and debris, eventually choking off the flow of water. We then made our way to Barcelona stopping for lunch along the way, it's so nice today as today is the first day we have really had where there has been no rain... Ahh the sun. After arriving in Barcelona we made our way to Sagrada Familia, a church that begun construction back in 1882 and is still being constructed, they expect to finish the construction in 2026, 100 years after the death of Antoni Gaudí who designed the church... I thought Avignon was amazing, this place must be astonishing, I only had a chance to see the outside today, but perhaps tomorrow I'll get a chance to go inside. After our quick look around the place we headed off on a guided tour of the main sites to see in Barcelona, of which there appears to be plenty, once again, another place I think I'll need to visit again to see everything. We got some photos from a lookout point overlooking the city and then made our way to tonight and tomorrow nights hostel "Equity Point", a very conveniently placed hostel in the township, very close to the main strip of shopping malls that most people will visit (especially at night). We had a couple of hours to spare on arrival at the hostel, so I headed upstairs to sort out my laundry (which was in urgent need of doing) and then a few drinks of sangria with the guys and girls. Ordering drinks was a bit different to back home, here you pre paid for your drinks at a machine, selecting the price for you wanted from the list, once you have done that, you take your receipt up to the counter and then specify which drink you want. A little different as I said, but hey... It works, perhaps they think that if they make you do it and you can't work out how to use it, your too drunk to order a drink... Who knows. After laundry was sorted it was a quick trip down to my room to grab a shower and change before heading out to dinner and then off to watch a Flamingo show. We got to our spot for dinner and were presented with different sizes of jugs to buy for our drinks, stupidly enough I decided to get a large one full of sangria, it wasn't so much an issue of getting a large one, but more the speed I drank it, polishing off the litre in about 10 minutes, I felt a little ill after that combined with the four or so glasses I had on the roof and needed a bit of food before I started to feel better. Off to the flamenco show, Ronnie was quite looking forward to it, I think he really likes it as I know he's seen it multiple times, they dances are very passionate with there dancing and look like they are giving it their all, doing that several times a night (several shows an hour long each) must take it out of them, but they still go hard out. Great show indeed. We then all headed off to a local bar/club which I think must be the local one for Topdeck tours as there were three different Topdeck groups there tonight. Due to the large consumption of alcohol, I decided to head off early and get some rest, Tim happened to meet up with me as I was saying goodnight to Imogen and Sharie, it's kind of good he did as he walked home with me and he had planes to turn left instead of right, which would have taken him in a completely different direction, I knew where I was going, Anyhow, we made it back, but instead of me sleeping, I've somehow appeared to have come back to the room and completed my blog for the evening, fresh air must have done me some good.
