Jono's Travels
Travel Day again today, Belgrade, Serbia to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It doesn't appear that the ear drops worked last night as I suspect that they couldn't get into my ear as it was so blocked, hopefully I'll be able to get it to work tonight. We departed the hotel and on the bus by 7:30 and made our way toward the Bosnia border, very simple to pass through this border, although there was a moment there that Fabian thought he may have lost his passport, he couldn't find it in his day pack, so went into his bag under the bus thinking he had left it in the pocket of his pants from yesterday, only to find it wasn't there. Turns out it was in his day pack on the bus after all, he just couldn't feel it the first time he checked. After we passed through the border, we made a lunch stop, it unfortunately wasn't the greatest service at the restaurant, the guy taking the orders was taking one or two at a time an then taking off, I got a bit annoyed and flagged placing an order and just went to the supermarket to get something to eat there. Fairly basic lunch, banana and some drinkable yogurt, but I was still happy with it. We continued on to the township of Srebrenica, where we spent the next two hours or so learning about the devastating history that has only recently happened during the Bosnian wars, over 8,500 lives tragically lost because of ethnic cleansing. One of the saddest things was that this has only happened within the last 25 years. Our guide for this part of the tour is a survivor of the holocaust, losing his father and brother during it. We were shown a video showing some of the survivors talking about them loosing their loved ones and still not knowing what has happened to them, and these days remains are still being found and are being identified through DNA. Every year on July 11th they also continue to bury the remains of the bodies that they have been able to identify, so far the graves just seem to continue on and on as far as we can see. Such a sad place to visit but glad to have learnt more about it. We continued on to Sarajevo, it too was affected by the wars, with bullet holes still clearly visible in the walls of some of the buildings. We got to the hotel and walking out of the bus, there was clearly the smell of Sulphur in the air, reminded me of Rotorua. Checked in and then continued onto a small walking tour of Sarajevo. We were shown a bridge where some guy was assassinated, apparently if he hadn't have been assassinated, we wouldn't have had World War 1 but who knows for sure. We headed off and had dinner, or should I say everyone else had dinner, me, I just had the soup and a little bit of the dessert, I wasn't really feeling that hungry anyway as I was beginning to get a headache from the ear issues. No alcohol could be served at dinner tonight either as Ramadan is going on, so apparently we could only have soft drink. Not sure if that's just an excuse or if they don't actually serve alcohol, cause as Tim pointed out, why are they serving food if they can't serve alcohol. After dinner we made our way off to a local bar where some of the guys had a drink, from there it was back to our hotel for us to either sleep, or once again... Drink. Me, I chose to sleep.
