Ok we are now in Cambodia.
The bus was meant to take 6 hours but it took 8 but im used to that now. i thought i might be abl to leep on the bus to get it over quicker but as soon as we got on, they put on some Vietnamese stand up, and it was Hilarious really loud annoying voices screaming at the crowd. Nice.
we finally arrived in Phnom Penn. When we got off the bus we were surrounded by the Cambodian tuk tuk drivers all offering to take u to a " very nice hotel." We looked abit like lost sheep we didnt have a clue where to go, We were used to the good treatment of Vietnam buses dropping you off at a reasonable hotel nice and easy. We finally met a driver who looked ok and spoke good english he took us to one hotel which was a dump, then to another one which was a dump aswell but not as bad as the first one. So we just booked it just to get rid of our bags.
We went down to the river side for a drink and something to eat we were both really surprised by how expensive ever was though all the prices are quoted in US $$$s so it all adds up. after finishing our food and drink we walked back to our hotel. Cambodia is very poor we had to walk past mums and babies sleeping on the streets and some of the kids havent got pants on.
Today we hired a tuk tuk driver for the day. and we got him to take us to The killing fields first, but on the way we stopped off at a shooting range where wecould shoot anything from a Colt pistol (fbi gun) to a tommy gun and a rocket launcher!!! it was quite expensive though but i had a go of an AK 47 machine gun, we just had to go into this big shed and shoot a target. I was crap but never mind. Kris had a go and hit the target in the head and the heart ( kris the stone cold killer as she is now known in Cambodia.)
We then went to the Killing fields, the first thing we come across is a massive memorial with over 8000 skulls inside, from babies to old men and women! some have even got bullet holes and some have been bludgened to death to save on expensive bullets!! It was really shocking and upsetting being face to face with all these skulls. When we walked around the grounds we come across some of the mass graves they have uncovered. But now and again you see odd bits of rags and bones poking out of the ground! So far they have found 19500 mass graves in Cambodia but experts think there will be alot more. roughly 3 million people died under Pol pot and the Kymer rouge.
From here we went to Site 21. the Kymer rouge main Prison and torture camp. This was very sad too as in every room there are black and white mug shots of the people kept here, in some you can see the fear so clearly in their eyes. and some of the photos are of young boys and girls who were also kept here. In some of the rooms there are pictures of people getting tortured and then some peoples confessions, but most of the people who were kept here their main crime was that the Kymer rouge thought they were intelectuals.
On the way back we saw loads f kids on their way home home from school. they all looked so smart and happy. actually everyone looks happy even though they have gone through some really bad times.
We have seen some alerts about if you see strange looking tourists with young kids you have to go and tell someone. This is a big problem over here as life is cheap when the people are so poor. One resturant we went in were doing a collection for the orphans who live in the junk yard they just scavenge through scraps of rubbish to live. most orphanages are packed no wonder brad pitt and angerlina jolie have adopted a kid from here. Me and kris are really tempted too!! (dont worry mum i wont be coming home with any kids.)
We have seen quite alot of Landmine victims today people without legs and one man with no face. they are all beggers but you cant give everyone money its really hard to walk past. We saw one man in Vietnam with no legs pulling himself around on his hands he wore sandals on them to protect his hands. Its really strange to see.
Tomorrow Siem Reap
