Ok we have arrived in The south of Vietnam.
We just got dropped off in the middle of a mental street, everyone was hasseling us saying come and stay at their guesthouse. First thing we did was drop off the bags in a travel agents just so we could walk around without looking like new blood!
we followed one women to her "guesthouse" we had to walk down about 3 alleyways then up 4 flights of stairs and when we finally arrive its a wardrobe with a bed in it! no thanks! so she took us to another one and we had to walk throught this families living room to get to our room. Again no thanks!
after about half an hour of checking in every hotel on the street we found a really nice hotel for the same price as the s***ty wardrobe room! that will do us nicely!
we went out for a few drinks and watched the Liverpool game Crouchy Hat-trick! and booked ourselves on a Cu chi tunnel tour
The tunnels at Cu Chi were used in the Vietnam war against the amercian soliders. they are a network of tunnels leading all the way from cambodia to the gates of saigon, they have kitchens, hospitals, class rooms and even a video room all underground!
we got to the tunnels and had to watch a documentry first then we got the tour around the surface first of all, showed all the traps they set for the enemy and then we were shown a escape tunnel. it was a tiny hole in the ground. the tour guide asked if anyone wanted to see what its like, so i was the first one up. i got into this tiny hole which leads to the tunnels and he closed the roof it was abit like being buried alive, not a good feeling.
The original tunnels have been widened for us western fatties to go in but they were still really tight, and not that much light either. a few people turned away when they saw the entrance but me and kris (the tunnel rats) just got straight into it and crawled along for 15 metres in the dark!!! the sweat was pouring off me! it was a good experience but even the tunnel being wider then it was when it was being used by the VC it was still abit scarey. i didnt want to come across any old boobie traps! we got told they used to put poisonious snakes and spiders in the boobie trap holes so if the bamboo spikes didnt kill you they would!
at the end of the tour a women was selling snake and scorpion wine. everyone was looking at it but no one wanted to try any... until I stepped up i did a shot of the stuff it tasted abit like vanilla liquor it was quite nice! but i was the only one to try it so i felt like a real man!!!
After we finished this tour we got dropped off at the War musuem (also known as American War crime musuem) as you can tell by the name they dont like the US much, but after the tour we can see why. The place was full of pictures of civilians who had been murdered by the US GIs also they showed before and after shots of what happened when the US dropped Napalm and other biological weapons. We looked at horrible and disturbing photos of women and babies badly burnt but still alive and also, we saw photos of some people who have been born after the war and they are severly disabled it was really sad to see.
From here we went to the Notre Dam Catherdral. and then walked back to our hotel.
we have booked ourselves on the bus tomorrow to Cambodia. even though we have only been here for about 10 days we have seen everything we wanted to. When i come home all im going to remember of Vietnam is the bloody buses, either we have been booking ourselves on one or been sitting on one! It does feel abit rushed but we dont see the point of hanging around in a place when its costing us Money so Cambodia here we come!
