So we have finally left the hustle and bustle of the cities and what a relief, I haven't seen the sea for freakin ages! We took an overnight bus from Bangkok down to a place called Surat Thani, it took about 12 hours, it was pretty damn tough as yet again the seats were designed for the smaller frame! We arrived at the port at 5.00 am to discover that the boat didn't actually leave until 9.30! Bloody great, we are in a dodgy little port in shorts and vest on the edge of the jungle getting bitten to shreds without a drop of deet within a mile! GREAT!
The boat arrived and we promptly got on, mostly to get away from the mosquitoes but also to get away from quite possibly the most annoying mother and daughter combo I have ever met in my life! The trip to Koh Samui took about 3 hours.
We arrived at our hotel, initially we thought our travel luck had diminished but it turns out that what we had gained in luxuries we had lost in people. We had this epic resort with no one to share it with bar a couple of stray dogs and a German couple on a honey moon.
Anyway the first day we booked in on a tour, we were to go quad biking around the mountains and through the jungles. The tour was pretty cool with only 4 of us on it so we got to do some pretty cool stuff, massive drops, steep climbs but unfortunately not a lot of speed. On our travels we stopped off at a coconut reserve where a small family that lived in a hut were farming coconuts for their oil. They were clearly high and it was actually quite funny to watch, they would sit away slicing the coconuts, while chewing on ghat and smoking a joint clearly oblivious to the outside world.
The next day we hired scooters as this seemed to be the major mode of transport, we explored the island on some of the dodgiest roads I have ever been on, and this was only my second day on a scooter, (its okay we were going slow….ish). We managed to find our own way to one of the water falls and then off to the Grand Mother and Grand Father rock. Its probably better if you google these rocks as I don't think I really want to write about it.
The last day we decided that we would go up to the top of the mountain where there was a place called Overlapping Rock, yes you guessed it, a rock that overhangs at the top of a mountain. It was really REALLY sketchy getting to the top as it was all off road but it was a challenge! When we got up there the views were out of this world!
All in all Koh Samui could have been better, it rained on most of the days and the hotel was pretty dull! I was glad to be moving on! Next Stop Koh Tao
