So we arrived at Beachcomber Island after a 2 hour boat journey through the bottom half of the Yasawas Islands witnessing some incredible views along the way.
From the ferry the little isolated island looked quite nice. We had heard some pretty bad things about Beachcomber so we were just going to make the most of it for the one night we had booked there. As we stepped off the boat onto the Island, unlike the other islands we were not welcomed by the local Fijians singing, but a foul smell of sewage. We both looked at each other and wondered what we have got ourselves into. We tried to stay optimistic and went to check in.
We were shown to our dorm room which was in a pretty dire state however we were the only ones staying in the 12 bed room, so that was a bonus. The island has a reputation for partying into the wee hours of the morning so at least we would not have to put with any drunkards snoring in our room, well apart from Brishay's little grunts that is.
The sun was setting so we decided to take a walk around the island which has a sand coastline all the way around it. It took a whole 5 minutes to complete the walk and at no point did we escape the horrendous smell. The beach was very disappointing, it was full of cigarette butts, rubbish and the water looked polluted. Complete opposite to what we had experienced in the other islands.
We decided to have a drink before tea. We sat next to some Australians and got chatting. We asked them what they thought of the island and could not believe that they thought it was the most amazing place ever!!! They had been here 5 days and had no intention of seeing the real beauty of Fiji as the boat journey was too long for them. We were shocked and wondered how anybody could come to Fiji and stay at a place like this. They were Australian though so it's probably the first time they have left "The Centre of the World", t*** ! (says Jonny)
Things just went from bad to worse. Dinner was served and I think the inmates in Nadi Prison are served better food. We were told it was beef, chicken, pork or fish all of which were disgusting. We decided to call it a night and take a beer to the room where we met "Anna", a maid that worked here. We got talking to her about the resort, she said its Australian owned and they pay her 2.50 (Fiji Dollars) that's £1 an hour. She has to work 24 days before she gets to go home for 5 days and to get home its pretty much a full day of travel each way. She also has to sacrifice 35 (Fiji Dollars) of her pay each week towards food. We were outraged at what we heard, she continued to tell us how mistreated they were and how unhappy all the workers are, it was awful to hear. This resort charged us 100 Fijian Dollars each for the night with the crap they called food. Felt a bit sick thinking thats how much she earns after 4days graft....
So that's takes us to now, sitting in our dorm room, disgusted with the resort and looking forward to getting to Nadi tomorrow. It's a shame we are ending our island tour here but we kind of expected it after what we had heard/read and are just treating it as a stop over before getting back to the mainland.
Apart from today as am sure if you read the past 2blogs, Fiji's Islands are hands down the most picturesque place we have visited. The crystal clear water and marine life that you can see by walking a mere 50meters from shore is incredible. The highlight for me (Jonny) for sure has been swimming with the Manta Rays which really was a lifelong ambition. The Fijian Islands really are some of the happiest, kindest people we have ever met and hopefully later in life we will be back to explore more.
We leave this dump tomorrow afternoon heading back to Nadi on the mainland where we have about 1day before our flight back to Sydney. Then we have just under 24hours in Sydney before our flight to Auckland for our 3week stint in New Zealand to commence.
Until then.... Its been a pleasure Fiji!
