Our train trip to Edinburgh was mainly uneventful, the bridge over the Firth of Fourth was the highlight, although the girls had gotten bored of us telling them about how long it takes to paint the bridge....
We booked in to our B&B which was quite different from the hotel in Inverness, good for the girls to see different types of accomodation. There is a lot we want to do in Edinburgh so we made a start straight away and walked to the Royal Mile, through the Grassmarket area. Quite an interesting walk as there are lots of 'gentlemens' clubs along the way! We visited St Giles Cathederal and the Museum on the Mound which is the museum for the Bank of Scotland. Was interesting to see a million pounds in used £20 notes, really doesn't look much when stacked up. Libby said she would have preferred it to have been a million chocolate coins! A good museum again with lots of info about how the banking system developed in Scotland. We are now looking forward to visiting Nicole at the Bank of England in the summer to see their million pounds.
Our second day in Edinburgh was always going to busy we planned to visit the National Museum and the Castle. Lots of walking but worth it. The museum is very interesting and we could have spent all day there. A mix of all of Londons museums in one.
The castle was very impressive, we approached it from the bottom of one of the steep sides and had to walk up 'Granny's Green Steps' which was a long steep walk. The Castle has many different exhbitions. Luckily they do an audio guide for the children which meant they gained a lot more from the experience. Again lots of info about the Scottish history in battles, not just against the English, but most of the world. Seems it has been a career path for many Scots over the years to join the forces. From talking to some of the guides in the Castle it has almost been a dig at the National Pride that regiments have been disbanded in Government cut backs in recent years.
