We woke early on Wednesday morning to get the bus to Yichang. After first getting on the wrong bus (which incidentally was really nice) we walked to the bus stop. We got on what looked like a public bus and the people piled on. In Yichang we both decided to go to the puclic toilets at the bus station - these have to be the worst I have ever seen - imagine the worst festival toilet and multiply that by 1000, there was even poo in the urinals! We were then bundled into a posh Audi 4x4, mafia style and dropped just 1km down the road. The bus was apparently at 1pm so we wandered, got some snacks and returned, only to discover the bus was ready (perhaps she meant 1hr not 1pm?) There was lots of shouting and arguing on the bus.. for the first time since being here I fealt my blood beginning to boil! We left, only to return 10 mins later to pick-up the the kung fu boys from the day before - obviously as confused as us! More shouting ensued and five people ended up sitting in the gangway - I shall never complain about National Express again. The journey was hot - about 20C i think - and its February! The bus dropped us off somewhere random in Wuhan but thankfully some nice teenagers with a map were at hand. A man who spoke a little broken English also helped us to get a taxi. No one in the hotel spoke English - In fact no one in Wuhan seems to speak English - dodgy pictures and hand actions had to get us through! The service in the hotel was also crap - I was missing hostels already! Hungry, from 4 days of eating pot noodles, we decided McDonalds was in order - we sufficed with KFC - after searching for 30mins for a cash machine which accepted foreign cards. We ate sooo much, 3 meals and chicken nuggets between us!
Yesterday I negotiated another days stay in the hotel, the woman was trying to fleece me for another 100yuan deposit and I was having none of it - the stalemate was broken by a man who spoke a little English - obviously siding with my superior intellect! We then headed for the river, which we couldn't find so opted for a park instead - this one was free! Barnes sunbathed all afternoon - yes it was hot! I on the other hand decided to make a wicker basket out of willow, i gave up half way but will post a photo asap for all those who want to admire my skills! In the evening, Barnes put her foot down and told me we weren't allowed pot noodle for dinner so we went out. First we went to the hotel restaurant, armed with the Lonely Planet. The waitress was very uncooperative though, pointing incesantly at the menu - like we could read that! We wandered - stopping at some very popular looking place, the chap spoke a little English and chose two dishes for us - they were great, an ommelette and aubergines, chuffed at Y38 as well! We paid and left, the man came running after us with our Y2 change! We obviously wanted him to have it... but how sweet! We spoke to the hotel staff about the airport - It took about an hour just to get the words terminal 2 written down, and even then it said "the second new build"!
