At first the weather looked quite promising this morning but as we got underway towards the Isle of Skye, it closed in and started raining quite hard. Unfortunately our long run of good weather appears to have come to an end and it is heavy overcast and occasional rain this morning as we push on up the west coast of Scotland. Still, how can we complain after the magnificent weather we have had so far. It was a dull day today as we headed off up the road. First stop was to Threave Castle which was constructed in the 14th century and was one of the many strongholds for the 'Black' Douglas clan. Now a days the island is a wildlife reserve and you can still get across to the ruin which is surrounded by water, by ringing a bell on the jetty to summon a ferryman. A brilliant sky greeted us again as we headed towards Chesters Roman Fort and Hadrian's wall. What an amazing structure and all the forts and associated buildings that the Roman's build. They were so ahead of their time. Hadrian was a Roman Emperor who during a visit to the area in AD122 decided that a wall needed to be built to mark the northern part of their conquered land and to keep the Scots out. Although still mild it is an overcast day with the threat of showers. No wind though so still very pleasant. Today is really about skirting around the western lakes of Cumbria to get a good look at the district. It is good to be back in convoy again with Charlie and Mandy as we have all been doing our own thing for a few days.
