European Adventure 2017
France may be well set up for Motorhomes but as far as Internet is concerned they are not, and when you can get it it costs an arm and a leg unless you want a contract. I was only able to upload a couple of photos to the last blog but as the signal is stronger here I will go back and add more. Anyway, back to our meal in the restaurant a couple of nights ago. Everyone was very surprised when Geoff decided to order snails as an entre and even more impressed when he ordered his main course in French. Trouble was the waitress had absolutely no idea what it was he wanted! Needless to say he loved the snails. We were up early next morning and headed off towards a little place near the coast called Carnac which was a pretty little town but as it was lunchtime nearly everything was closed until 2pm! The point of interest here is the acres and acres of Megalithes dating back some 350 to 500,000 years BC. No one knows who put them there, why and how as some in particular are huge. Many suggestions of the origins were debated as we moved around them but most of them rather ridiculous. We decided to stay at a France Passion stop for the night. This runs in the same way as the Brit Stops in that these are businesses which offer free accommodation in the hope that you will buy from them. The stop we chose for the night was called Au Rythme des Marees and they harvested cockles, oysters, crabs, lobsters and a few fish which poked their heads out of the water and looked at us as we peered into their tank. Poor things may have thought they were on the menu but they were safe as after a couple of drinks at the bar we headed back to our vans and cooked tea before headed off on a walk over to an island which was just lovely. We watched the sun set at 10.05pm Up early the next morning(Thursday) we headed off towards La Rochelle. We passed through miles and miles and still more miles of crop and grain farmland dotted here and there with clusters of wind turbines. The little villages along the way are quite picturesque but as we covered 400km that day a fair bit if it was on the fantastic motorway system which is so smooth. That fact is a bonus when you have a bladder like mine and you have your house travelling with you! Our stop for the night was at an Aire on the beach at Ile de Re (an island off La Rochelle) and it was gorgeous. White sands and 27 degrees. Wandering the beach we suddenly became aware that clothing was optional and we appeared to be the only ones wearing any! Tomorrow we head for Cognac. Just as I thought we had good coverage it disappeared again but I will post what I have done so far without some of the pictures I would have liked to put in so that there is something to read.
