An early start and we were at the Powell Street cable car stop without a queue. We rode as far as Lombard Street where we walked up to watch the cars 'waltz' down the street. There are several zig zags with hydrangias and other flowers planted in each zig and zag. Its a very steep and very unique street. We jumped the next cable car to the cable car museum and winding house and then another car to the waterfront where we looked over a number of historic boats in the historic waterfront manged by the National Parks.
On an old bay ferry Maureen got excited when she discovered an old Packhard - a less stretched version of one her dad had.
After lunch we headed to Pier 33 for the Alcatraz tour. It was very interesting seeing the 'rock' and learning about the famous inmates. I doubt that even Al Capone would have mistaken it for the Hilton. Cells were very basic, very small, very exposed and very uncomfortable. In some cells they were only allowed out once a week for a shower and exercise.
On return we had tea at Fisherman's Wharf at a restaurant where again we were given a window table by the docks.
Although we had to use over 12 hours, we at last have fitted everything into our visit to San Francisco.
Tomorrow we start the last section of our trip - the California coastal highway.
