Budapest Day 3
Our last day in Budapest started with a sumptuous breakfast in the hotel bistro. The weather this morning had turned rainy again so we set off for Parliament with our umbrellas once again deployed. We arrived at Parliament and we were looking forward to going through the the building. Unfortunately though, you can only visit the building by going on a tour. The next English language tour was over two hours away so we decided to move on.
Our next stop was Gellert Hill, the highest point in Budapest. We took the tram to the Gellert Hotel and Spa and the commenced our climb. The first stop along the journey was the Church in the Rock. This small church is located in a cave just above the Gellert Hotel. Very interesting in how the church has been laid out. There are some photos of the church.
We then continued our walk to the top of the hill. The path was steep in part and gave use a good work out. At the top of the hill you find the Szabadsag szobor or Liberty Statue. An imposing figure of a women holding an olive branch. It commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary. Behind the statue is the Citadella, a fortress building built in 1854.
We continued back down the hill, this time by the road network which was a bit more civilised. We then boarded the subway and headed to Hösök Tere or Heroes' Square. We also went past the Fine Arts Museum. Returning back towards the hotel by subway we stopped in for lunch in a Hungarian cafe.
Back in the hotel we visited the Royal Spa (see separate entry) and then relaxed in our room enjoying room service for dinner. Tomorrow we have a day of rail travel as we journey to Venice.
As usual, several photos have been updated.
