We were spoiled in Prague. The breakfast there was over the top. This morning we had a roll, some yogurt and a pastry. It did the job but not too noteworthy. The coffee however was astounding! We ordered the cafe latte what came was a pitcher of coffee and a smaller pitcher of warm frothy milk. I actually can't for more of it tomorrow!!
After breakfast we headed back out to explore. We bought a couple more things from what Kim likes to refer to as the "s*** shops" and I think we did pretty good. We also decided it would probably be a good idea to scout out where we will be leaving on our cruise tomorrow given our track record. We walked the route from our hotel and decided it probably would be best if we took the water bus there instead. We also discovered the Venice monorail! It's not anything like the monorail, mainly because it has more than one rail, but it comes close. It's also very aptly named the "People Mover". We most definitely will be utilizing this to get to the cruise terminal.
After we felt comfortable about how we were to get to the cruise ship we turned back toward the city. We happened upon a very good eatery for lunch. We were originally just going to stop in for a glass of vino but they had the most amazing looking seafood in the window. We didn't even bother with the menu, but had the waitress work up a sample plater with a half liter of white wine. It was a serious score! A little on the spendy side, but for what we got I think it was a deal and a half! Feeling full and a little warm from the wine we set back out. We still needed to find Piazza San Marco.
This is the biggest square in Venice and there are signs with arrows leading the way, but I swear those arrows lead you on the longest route ever. It took us a very long time to get there but once we did it was worth it. It was magnificent! We decided to skip going in mainly because we wouldn't be able to take pictures and that seemed just a little unfair, so we bought some postcards instead for a fraction of the cost of entering! Deals!! (there was an open door down the way from the entry so we were able to sneak a couple photos in.). One very disappointing thing that occurred here was when we found the bridge of sighs. The bridge was visible but on every side there were huge advertisements. It was very tacky. Luckily we had already bought the postcard so we'll have at least one good picture of it.
On the way out we found a sandwich shop that had some delicious looking sammies, both in taste and in price, so we snagged a couple of them for dinner later as we didn't feel like repeating out experience from the night before. At this point we were hot and had food that needed to be put in the fridge so we headed toward the water bus. We decided that purchasing the 24hr pass would be best as we'd need to take it to the ship in the morning anyways, even though it was a little spendy. However, we've already made good use out of it so I suppose it was money well spent.
After we got back to the hotel and deposited the winnings of the day we decided to head back for a late afternoon snack at our favorite restaurant. I was a little worried that a second trip might prove to be a mistake if it turned out it wasn't as good as we remembered. However, today they went above and beyond. Yesterday we had four pairs of toppings today we had a wonderwheel of different things to try!!! We also bought a bottle of the raboso, aka sparkling red wine. It is some serious eats and I would stay an extra day here just to go back there.
Our final adventure of the night was a trip to the Billa... More commonly known as the grocery store. It didn't start out that way at all. It started with an innocent water bus ride to a place of town we hadn't been yet. As we were walking we saw the Billa and went right in. We picked up our final souvies, some fancy pasta that was selling in the street for 2-3 times as much, some wine to go with our sandwiches and a thing of risotto. The wine, which I am drinking at this very moment out of a plastic hotel supplied cup has the word "elegance" daintily scripted across it, was only $1.99. It's the venetian equivalent to the two buck chuck!
As we are ending our last night here eating good food and drinking cheap wine writing about our day I am sad that we will be leaving tomorrow, but also thankful we only decided to stay for two nights. I don't think I could do another day here. I don't know if maybe it's just sensory overload as everything is so beautiful or what, but I am exhausted from being here.
Well onto the next leg of the journey!!
