We woke up to the wonderful polynesian Samoa folklore music, right in front of our balcony, the Samoans are so proud of their island and we were welcomed like kings and "Queens", it being the first time that Queen Elizabeth has arrived in port.
Having experienced the humidity in Samoa, we'll never complain about it in Florida again! The morning started off rainy and cool but as soon as that passed the humidity hit the roof. Our port call was in Apia, the capital city of Samoa. The island is very lush and tropical, with beautiful beaches, waterfalls and super friendly locals.
The island is not developed but the Samoans welcomed us with such courtesy and warmth that we felt so humble to be their guests, tourism is a vital role in their economy.
Our excursion took us east through the villages, untouched for decades and to waterfalls and the botanical gardens where we had a coconut harvesting demonstration. It must be said that the Samoans are all very handsome people and Stuart soon wanted a lavalavas, this is a wraparound skirt that everyone wears, male of female, trousers are never worn. Stuart now has two to wear on board, photos will follow!
We hit the town and the friendly locals approached us with questions: where did we come from?; did we like the island?; will we tell our friends to visit?, tourists stand out easily, the Samoans wear flip flops or bare feet, our trainers are never seen. They are very curious about the rest of the world, the family is very much at the heart of the Samoan lifestyle and although the country is developing, many have never travelled far.
We arrived back at the ship to a farewell polynesian show, again on the quayside, we waved our goodbyes and off we go south to American Samoa, Pago Pago on Thursday.
