As we had seen koh phi phi and maya bay on the film The Beach, we were really excited to be going to one of Thailand's most famous destination. The port you arrive to in phi phi is a nice little fishing village, you get off the boat to quaint little street's with nice shop's and restaurant's. One of the first thing's you notice is there isn't any transport to get around. So we know we will be walking everywhere, but as the island is very small this doesn't matter too much. Just lugging the backpack around can be a pain.
Over the other side of the island is the beach which from looking out to the sea look's like it's from the film. This is packed with bar's and is the place to go out for drink's. We stayed in a room a few rows back, which had a high balcony overlooking the sea, it was quite a noisy until the early hour's, but is bearable. we planned to stay here for a couple of day's, but on the second day we were basically room bouned as there was a monsoon and it was too dangerous to go out, so we were stuck here for for four day's (not that i'm complaining) we could just watch from our room as the wind was blowing so fiercely it was snapping the top of the palm tree's off!
One of the best day's we had on the island was when it finally stopped raining and we decide to walk to the view point. This was a really rewarding walk as the view was amazing as you can see from the photo's. We then decided to walk through the forest down a path to a private beach where there is a private resort to stay, but as it is so hot and humid i dont really think the walk down there was worth the effort!
We are alway's on the lookout for nice cheap food, like every backpacker. There was a shack at the port side of the island called sam's place which became our regular eatery, the staff are really friendly and the food was alway's good. The man has photo's from when the tsunami hit their island, and he will happily tell you his story, it really bring's to life what they must of gone through. He was actually rescued by an English guy whom gave him some money so he could start up his restaurant again.
