We arrived at Bankok at 8pm after our ten hour flight, Quantas was brilliant would definetly fly with them again, so much food!! Joe wasn't too happy when the flight steward refused his tenth drink though haha. We got in a taxi, they have air conditioned mercedi's benz waiting.
Pre booked our hotel was very close to the airport but would recommend staying in city centre if you want to be in the action, As we were quite isolated.
We went out for dinner at a local restaurant where no one spoke any English, we ordered our food and ended up with something completley different to what we thought we ordered but enjoyed it any way. We were so happy to finally be there it all seemed a bit surreal.
We made our way back to the hotel walking past food stall's, tuk tuks and ten people on one scooter!!! Went to bed ready for our big day of travelling to Koh tao.
Got up early the next day and finally got hold of a taxi, we told him the train station we wanted to go to, which was basically the main train station in Bankok, but somehow ended up in the middle of nowhere in a remote station. Think this may be a trick they play to earn themselves more money!
An hour later one more taxi and a train journey, we finally found the right station. As a result of being late we missed the day time train and had to wait around for the night train, we had fun wandering around where Joe was excited to see his first buddist monk.
It cost us 400bht (£8) for the train journey to chumpon the only seat's available were third class. It was very basic and the toilet was a hole in the floor which smelled awful and was dirty but hey it's only an eight hour journey. Your seat consist's of a leather cushion which folds into a bed (your not aloud to put together yourself, you have to wait until 8pm when a night porter comes and set's your bed up for you) and a fan that is shared between four people. Whilst on the train whenever it stop's,, people get on the train to sell you cold drinks and home made food. We felt reasonably safe, but there was a few dodgy character's who kept walking up and down the train staring at everyone, so i would just keep valuable's close just incase.
We got off the train at 10pm and there were people with scooter's waiting to give u a lift to the boat terminal, but we were not so keen to get on the back of seperate one's with our backpack's. we had got talking to other travellers and ended up bartering for eight of us to get in the back of a yute which cost us less than a quid each.
As we arrived to get the boat at night our only choice was to get on a fishing boat sheduled to go to the island, i so wish we had thought to take a photo of below deck it was like a squat with thin dirty matresses on the floor. This was where we had to spend the next seven hours of our journey, the sea was rough and i didn't get any sleep. we also later found out that by speed boat it would have only taken an hour, but this is all part of the fun. As we were getting closer to the island Joe suggested we go outside to watch the sunrise, the hellish journey all seemed worthwhile and we knew we was going to love our travel's.
