On sunday I flew from Quito to the Galapagos. I met another girl from London (also 27) called Katherine (yet another Katherine/Catherine in my life!!!!) who came to the Galapagos project on the same day. We´re sharing a room and generally have a laugh... what a nice coincidence!
We were picked up at the airport on San Cristobal by a member of the project staff. THe project is called Jatun Sacha and the purpose of the project is to protect endemic species. What this entails is machetting a LOT of mora. Mora is the evil weed that is taking over the islands and it was brought here by a lady about 50 years ago who wanted mora in her garden. The same lady also bought over the carmaletta- a really nasty litle mosquito that has been enjoying me... so all in all this woman is not very popular!!! (i think she died a couple of years ago). Mora is agressive and spreads by birds eating it and dropping the seeds everywhere. It is a kind of rasberry and tastes really nice but it suffocates all of the other plants and spreads v quickly!
The station is 40 minutes away from the port in the highlands. It has electricity and water (unexpected!) but no communication (phones, email, cars...) and is the end of a very dodgy track. At the mo there are about 15 volunteers at the station and 4 staff. The work is v hard but pretty fun and the island is amazing.
We work all week and at the weekend we can come into port. Port is lovely and is full of sea lions! They make a noises like old drunk men being sick... v funny!
I´ll be back blogging tomorrow to fill you in properly on the last week. Right now it is dinner time and afterwards there is a Pisco Sour with my name on it!!!
