Wake up 5 AM for 5:40 departure on safari. 8 of us in back of Range Rover pickup. Saw dozens of elephants, 100s of impalas, several giraffes, bunch of baboons, a few hippos, a kudu, several Cape Buffalo, some jackels, whole lot of birds, and one lonely lion.
Got back about 930 and went straight to breakfast.
Met at 1130 for a boat ride on large pontoon boat billed as leisurely lunch and booze cruise on the Chobe River. All went well, had a fantastic lunch, saw a whole slew of critters BUT on the way back got hit with terrible thunderstorm. Pilot could not maneuver the boat so he beached it in the marsh to ride out the storm. We got drenched and “froze” from the wind. 24 people from St James huddled together. A bonding experience.
Before the deluge we saw more elephants, hippos, Buffalo, deer, birds etc. on ride back we discovered a “herd” of crocs. Big ones, looked hungry, smiled at us.
Got lots of photos all day. Keith, our guide, was born in what is now Zambia and has led an interesting life including 12 years a soldier in the Zimbabwe Army. Also owned a clothing mfg company. 72 years old and has been tour guide for past decade.
