This morning we left the homestay and drove to Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon. Our hotel is in a good location, walking distance to most places. Walking the streets feels like I am in New York because of the apartment style buildings and street vendors below. There are motor bikes everywhere. There are 6 million motor bikes in the city for the 8 million population. Crossing the street is crazy. You just have to slowly start crossing the road, make eye contact and hope for the best. The motor bikes and cars do not stop for anything. There are tourist police at some intersections who help foreigners cross the road. We even saw two motorbike collide. They went flying off their bikes but thankfully everyone was alright.
In Vietnam I am rich. 20,000 Vietnam dong is equivalent to $1. So I took two million out of the ATM today. No big deal.
The first Starbucks in Vietnam is in Saigon. I had a little visit. Same drink orders and everything.
We walked around the city and Albert showed us around. We had pho, went to the market and went over to the posh area. There was Gucci, Kelvin Klein and all those other name brand stores that are out of my price range. I enjoy walking around Saigon because there is so much to see. It is a fun place to be. We got to know the area well and were able to find our way around.
A new girl from Scotland joined the group today and we lost three of the other girls as there were only doing the Cambodia part of the trip.
We went to this "bar" in the evening. Hundreds of tourists sat on the street in little child plastic chairs. The locals kept serving us $1 drinks. It was a crazy party and then the Dutch came along in their orange shirts as they were celebrating the new King in Holland. There must have been 50 of them marching around and chanting. They joined us for $1 drinks. It was all very entertaining.
