On the way to Munich we stopped off at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Neither of us have ever been to a place like this and it was a very sad and extremely difficult to process moment. This camp ran from 1938 till the last week of the Second World War. There were almost 200 000 people deported to this camp and at least 100 000 of them died here or in surrounding satellite camps. Before entering the camp we watched a video that went for 45 minutes and explained in great detail and showed pictures of the horrendous acts that went on here! There are no words to describe how this made you feel. We then went into the camp and it was the most saddest, eerie, desolate, gloomy, cold, unfriendly place I've ever been. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of walking through it. After watching the video you could get images of what happened in each of the places you walked into. It was chilling! I remember one story they said that the inmates use to have to go into this yard that was surrounding by a brick wall and they would spend the entire day out in that yard no matter what the weather was like....naked! Now we were walking through there with thermals, shirts, jumpers, jackets, scarves, beanies, gloves and the wind was going straight through us. We were cold! And that wasn't even the coldest it got. That's not the worst thing that happened but you could imagine just spending those 45 minutes out there with layers on was enough let alone all day in rain, snow, wind etc. We went through the gas chambers, the torture rooms, the crematorium etc and after seeing the images if what went on in those rooms an then standing in them was a feeling I never want to experience again. I find it so hard to believe that one man can do that to another even if they are following orders or for whatever reason. Anyway that's enough for now. Sorry to share the bad stuff but every one should visit one of these camps to truly appreciate what they went through.
