Whitneys on Tour
We arrived back in Mumbai on 9th April to begin a three week organised tour run by The Imaginative Traveller which takes us through Northern India and ends up in Kathmandu, Nepal at the end of the month.
Having already spent over a week in Mumbai when we first arrived in India three and a half weeks ago we really couldn't be bothered exploring much of it again in the day we had here although Jo did go off on a mini sight-seeing tour with some of our other travelling companions. Our tour group was 13 strong although there were only two men, including Stuart. However, everyone seemed cool enough and our guide, Kuldeep although fairly young was clearly very organised and knew what he was doing.
AHMEDABAD
We took an early moring train from Mumbai on the 10th which took us to Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat which to Stuarts absolute horror was a dry state. Ahmedabad is a pretty large, polluted and typically hot and chaotic Indian city which doesn't have much of interest or note about it other than being the home of Mahatma Gandhi , which we paid a visit too. In fairness we were only here as a stop of on route to the more interesting places north in the Rajistan and it did at least posses an absolutely superb rooftop restaurant which Kuldeep took us too. The food was Thali (so we were told) and the flavours devine and most unusual.
UDAIPUR
The next morning (the 11th) we took a five hour long bus to the city of Udaipur where we were due to spend a couple of nights. All the travelling was worthwhile as this was a really impressive, picturesque city on the lakes and easily the best city we have seen in India so far. Having said that you're constantly reminded that this is the third world as cattle are constantly seen on busy streets which is a bizarre sight and an elephant greeted us outside our hotel when we arrived. We enjoyed a superb dinner overlooking the lakes on a first evening with the additional added benefit of a beer for Stuart (joy!). The next day we were taken around the magnificent city temple (see above photo) which was/is home to the Maharaja and enjoyed a boat trip in the evening. Udaipur is also known as the place where the James Bond film Octop**** was shot and we ate our evening meal whilst watching that on a large screen. Is was all pretty touristy here but it was good fun and we stayed in an excellent hotel and our tour group are fun so no complaints all round so far!
