We can start by saying this is the adventure capital of New Zealand so Joanna felt the need to throw herself off a bridge to prove it. On our drive (long drive I might add) from Rangitata we again made a few stops on the way for plenty of photos on the paparazzi camera.... im assured that when we understand how to transfer the files from a raw image they will be out of this world.... or so Jo keeps saying, these flash pro cameras!!!!.
About 20 Km's away from Queenstown we passed our first real life bungy site, A J Hackett (the worlds first bungy, or so it says on the certificate)..... we had decided that we would not be bothering with a bungy as.... well lets be honest, its madness! but Jo felt that this would be the perfect setting to simulate suicide. She had decided the weather the following day would best suit her graceful fall from a 43m bridge so we left for the afternoon after watching several maniacs jump and a couple of sane people bottle it at the last second!
Into town to book our accomodation for the night, wotif.com again came up trumps again and landed us a hotel in a brand new development overlooking the lake for pretty much the same price as a hostel..... I fell asleep thinking Jo had been in the sun too long and there was no way she would actually jump the next day.
Day 2..... I wake up at 8am, book Franz Josef glacier walk for the next day and return to the hotel room to an 'in the zone' Jo pumping herself up to fall off a bridge! I thought a ride in the skyline gondola would be enough to slap some sense into her so off we went...... the height and incline mixed with high winds scared us both half to death (wimps), at the top we took a ski lift to the next level and rode a luge (basically a go kart) back down to the bottom (scenic route of course).... very good fun!
I was wrong.... Jo still wanted to go for it so off we went to A J Hackett, watched a few more thrill seekers before booking her in (the lady behind the counter asked if I would be jumping............... erm, no!... not for me thanks!) up to the bridge to be strapped up and into the que, it wasn't great when the lady in front totally freaked out and had to back out but Jo was determined and 40 seconds later it was like watching a beautiful swan enter into flight...... or like a sack of spuds fall off a lorry!
All the while I, the camera man (paparazzi camera, samsung & video camera all in hand... I looked Japanese) enjoyed my safe, sunny and secure environment from the viewing platform!
Next stop Franz Josef!
