Jo's Most Excellent Adventure
Just when you thought I couldn't get any cooler.......
I GOT BACKSTAGE AT A ROCK FESTIVAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And actually....it was rather quite dull! But nm, have been having the craziest few days in Bangkok. Left James and Ben in Kho Phanagn as awkward love triangle emerged mid Full Moon Festivities so I just went ahead booked my bunk on the night train to Bangkok - an experience in itself! Ended up being bunked next to this group of utterly mad aussie girls and really really hot english guys, (shame that they were just fine rippling specims of muscle and had no brains but still good to look at ;) !) and on finding out I was going to see Oasis too they invited me along to crash with them.....why not?!
We arrive at Bangkok station at 5am and head off to Ko San Road the main backpacker street in Bangkok. We didn't have tickets but got them later on as this is thailand and there are touts everywhere.
So we rock up at this festival, (for it turns out to be a two day event with Oasis, Franz Ferdy and Ian Brown as the main acts on Day One and the Stereophonics, (!!!!!) Snow Patrol, Maximo Park and Placebo as main acts on Day 2. An awesome lineup non?) and instantly there are several things wrong.
1. They only serve whiskey and beer as alcoholic drinks.
2. They have one, yes one beer tap for a festival of 20,000 people.
3. It is 4pm and they have run out of beer! :(
4. They hand stamp you for your section but no wristband or anything.
5. No outside perimeter fence above waist height.....
6. The three ticket sections are also only divided by waist height fences......
Now I'm no festival conisseur but even I could tell that security was hmmmm somewhat lax. So we watched Ian Brown and desperately decided we needed beer, so Ashley and I snuck over the fence behind the touts and bought some from a vendor outside. We got them back in but in the process of chucking them back over I got a blackeye but nm, we got beer which was most important.
Franz Ferdy were completely awesome, even better than the last time I saw them and the crowd was going crazy! And then OASIS! Being a blur girl at heart I found some of their stuff a little taxing but then when they played all the classics like Morning glory, wonderwall and don't look back in anger everyone was swaying with cigarette lighters - the atmosphere was just magic.
Next day we came prepared for poor festival organisation and brought a picnic before the festival. Thai red bull all the way!!!! But then we discover that the Stereophonics have pulled out for "personal reasons" and have been replaced by the Futureheads, am most disappointed but Snow Patrol and Placebo promise to be awesome. After watching the futureheads and maximo park ash and I decide that enough is enough and we decide to blag our way into the expensive ticket section right at the front, (we have middle tickets with a blue stamp) the stamp for the front is a red circle....so we give ourselves hickeys on our arms and VOILA! and instant stamp that gets us in right to the very front straight away!!!! So I saw Snow Patrol right up against the barrier and they were sooooooooo good! I manage to watch a bit of Placebo's set but it all gets a bit much so I pretend to faint and get hauled over the barrier.....this is when it gets good!!! They take me back stage to get water and fanned etc. and by faking an asthama attack I get to hang out backstage for over half and hour in which time I see all the bands and the bass from snow patrol even asks me if I'm alright? YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!! Then get chucked out by evil backstage woman who realises that I have no pass grrrr but still was most amazing!
So there you go! I'm going to spend a couple more days with the aussie girls in Bangkok checking out the sights before heading up north to Chiang Mai. Have also heard about this really cool place in Laos where you can stay in tree huts with zip wires in between so am going to try and get there before the 18th when I have to be in Vientiane. \
Hope you're all suitable jealous, now I must nurse my poor head from all that rock n roll!!!
Peace out
Jo
